It began in 1955 the glory years for Australia and a country that was becoming a new home to anyone willing to work hard and make a future in this bold new country.
My Dad was 17 when he arrived and his first job was in hospitality. This is where the retail training began, dealing with customers, their wants, desires, and dreams, it was all in a day’s work for my dad. This is where he honed his skills in customer relations, customer service, and retail marketing.
He realised early that it’s all about the customer, the relationship, the service and the marketing.
After a few years it was time to venture on his own and a new business was started, a seafood business.
This business was an instant success, good food, and good service. After a few years it was time to move on and a new challenge lay bare.
The seafood business was sold and another business was started. Fresh fruit and vegetables and another challenge but the same principles were put in place, all about the customer, the relationship, the service and the marketing.
This fruit and vegie business was operated by mum and dad, and this is where I came along. I was practically born in the shop. Mum was a full 9 months pregnant and ready to pop when I was due to arrive, guess what she was doing? She was serving customers. It was a race to the hospital. I arrived and was there any rest for the wicked? Oh no, after a week of recovery I was in the shop and mum was back serving customers. How’s that for dedication to the customer. Well if you have no customers you have no business.
There have been varied businesses along the way till this day. From the Cafe in 1955 at the start of this retail training to the Fruit and Vegie, Milk Bars, Fish and Chips, Supermarkets, Liquor, and Cafes. It has come full circle. I sometimes wonder why that is. I think it’s because in the hospitality business you get instant feedback from your customer. I call this a dynamic response. From the moment they walk in, sit down, order have their food and drink you have utilised all of their senses. And if you have done it correctly, they will be back with their friends.
Repeat business is the strength of a good business.
This is only a small amount of information that has been passed on to me by my mum and dad. I hold it dear to me as they have proved it in their successful businesses.
It has been a journey of successful businesses but only because of a little secret.
